I'm working on getting robertglieden.com back up and running. I've switched my domain over to get away from Go Daddy. With the change I want to note that shortly all prints will be going over to being limited in edition. I like the idea of them (hopefully) running out and keeping me busy to produce more. Also debating the goal of releasing one new print every month? The change to limited editions will impact my Etsy shop the most. Prices will increase pretty dramatically so if you've been wanting something do it before the end of April to get the best price. Spring is here and it's got me motivated but I've been terribly sick the whole last week keeping me down.

So I've been laying low but things are going well. 2012 looks to be a strong year with a few very good exhibitions lined up. In the meantime I received an artist initiative last year and did make quite a few images with the time I gained from the grant. I'll slowly be working on those images and sharing them. Really been liking twitter lately and the absolute best thing to stay in touch would be to follow me there. You don't even need an account; just go to twitter.com/robertglieden and you can read what I'm up to. You'll see that winters been about skiing and soon I'll be on the bike but there will be more photography updates mixed in there as well.

No posts and no website... I'm slacking I know... robertglieden.com is no longer up as I chose not to renew. Most of my visits came from here, the blog, anyway. I am still keeping up my etsy store and will be putting more effort into that project as it's been good. Also considering joining flickr and not opposed to bringing robertglieden.com back. Cassie already says I need to. I've also started another project called grade 12 photo that is very much in the beginning stages. I did make plenty of images the last year but have a lot of processing to do. You'd think winter would be the best time to get around to it but I'm a pretty big skier and can't hit the slopes enough the way it is. Little by little, one step at a time I'll get around to it. Hope all is well.

Lack of posts = lack of photography

Well I wasn't joking with my last post as I haven't written in a while. Not too much to report on the photography front. Basically being a Dad and getting out on the mountain bike while I still can. It won't be long before the skis will come out and I've been dreaming about skiing regularly already (last night I dreamt I was in Jackson Hole for the first big dump of the year). The only photographs I've been making have been with our little Panasonic GF1 and they've all been family. Good little camera that is. Even if I wanted to sell it my wife probably won't let it go - she likes it that much too. It's easy to take videos and you can pretty much just put it on auto and get great pictures and video anywhere at any time. The only thing I find myself doing is putting my eye to the viewfinder to take a picture but it doesn't have one. You have to compose on the lcd screen on back which I don't care for. Other than that not too much to note except I'm starting to look at Leica M8's as their price has dropped dramatically and I think I'd find myself making more pictures with it being digital and its ease of use.

I'm a dad

I became a father to a baby girl last Wednesday Aug. 18th at 2:01 p.m. Cassie, Ezra and I are home and doing well. Thank you to all family and friends for all the gifts, prayers and well wishes. We're both taking some time off and just enjoying our time at home.

To capture some of these memories we bought a Panasonic GF1 and it's been an awesome little camera. It takes great pictures and even makes HD movies. Fun little camera. Maybe in the next few days I'll work on some of the new 4x5 negatives I've scanned. Maybe I will, maybe I won't - taking it pretty easy right now and enjoying it...

I'm listening to the 50th running of the Knoxville Nationals tonight on the net tonight. Today I went to National Camera Exchange's tent sale and got a few filter pouches to organize the camera bag. Also got a bag for Cassie's Panasonic GF1 we bought to take HD video of our baby - due any day now! While there played with a Leica M9 which was lovely.

I've scanned all the negatives I've been making lately and am psyched on a few of them. Will share them when I get the time and the time will come no time soon... Sorry but read above - a lot going on right now!

Refreshing

Ran some 4x5 film through the new camera this weekend and did it ever feel good. High humidity and mosquitos couldn't slow me down. Tried Ilford Delta 100 in 4x5 for the first time and it worked fairly well, scans look good. May go back to Hp5 as I like the faster speed and it takes less time in the developer - to very minor non-aesthetic reasons. Need to use more Delta 100 to be sure or they both have their places... Too early to tell.

If you've read my last post you know I've gotten out of outdoor shows. Because of it I have a lot of small prints around the studio. Etsy is the only place to purchase prints right now. The page gets a lot of views and I've even got quite a few "hearts". Please check it out at your convenience.

I am always searching for outlets to sell my work and if at anytime you'd like to show my work I'd be more than happy to remove the page. Currently, I only have 4x6 prints for sale (some matted, some loose) but will consider adding larger ones later. It's considerably easier to ship the small ones. Please do note that once these are gone I will not be showing or reprinting these anymore as I'm focusing completely on making limited edition large format work.

I tried my hand at a few outdoor art shows the last few summers. Never had much luck selling prints and finally the time commitment I invested in them quickly became too much work for too little in return. I have sold off my booth and most supplies which has allowed me to purchase the 4x5 camera I've always wanted - an Ebony RSW 4x5. It is really similar to my Shen Hao TFC(now sold) but better built, simpler and drop-dead gorgeous. I may never need another camera... It'll be a few days before any film gets ran through it but I look forward to it.

In conclusion, you will not see me at any more outdoor art shows. I enjoyed the few I did and met a lot of nice people but have realized they are not the correct venue for my work. I really wish they worked for myself and thank those of you for all the kind words and support. Any of my spare time will now be spent in the field making photographs. Everyday I look for calls for entries and will continue to look for exhibition opportunities and outlets to show/sell my work. This is and always has been the place to stay informed of any upcoming shows/events.

No posts in a long time again... This is becoming the norm and that's not good. I have been using the Twitter instead; so much easier. Follow me @robertglieden. I've been making some photographs and watching the Tour de France as of late. Hoping Andy Schleck can continue to impress. I have a lot of processing of images to do but it's summer and that work is better left to winter. I'll work on a few here and there but for now I'm out creating new work and enjoying summertime. Hope you are doing the same.

Big news day...

Big fire in Hutchinson (where I'm originally from) and then I come across this article (do note I'm from Carver but Carver and Chaska are next door neighbors):

The Chaska Police Department said an intoxicated woman was arrested after driving to pick up her husband from jail, who was also arrested for driving while intoxicated.

Police say after the man was arrested and brought to Carver County Jail, his wife called dispatch asking what was happening to her husband. The operator told her he was being charged with fourth-degree DWI, had been booked in jail but could be released to a sober party.

The wife told the dispatcher that she was too drunk to drive and that she would either take a cab or have a friend drive her to the jail.

A few hours later, the wife called dispatch again and said she was driving in Chaska and needed directions to the jail.

The dispatcher said she sounded more intoxicated than the previous call. The wife was given directions and the dispatcher notified police of her location.

An officer quickly found the wife driving in the wrong lane of traffic on Fourth Street and onto Beech Street.

The officer pulled her over and placed her under arrest, after she failed field sobriety evaluations. During a breathalyzer test, the wife blew a .300 BAC.

She was taken to jail, where she requested to be placed in the same cell as her husband, so they could be together.

The request was denied and she was placed in a detox facility.

I want to take a moment to thank Sharon at Gert and Erma's in Glencoe for the opportunity to show my work and being such a good host. Also was a pleasure to see both Bonnie Mohr's and Elynn Lepel's work. Our work all went very well together despite the different mediums.

One quick side note: At one point in the evening I observed an old tractor driving down the main drag in Glencoe with a teen behind the wheel texting! Okay, teen texting = normal. Teen texting driving in the middle of a farm field - sure. Seeing it on a busy main street just didn't seem right; it was out of place... Where's a camera when you need one?

Too busy as of late - not complaining though, just whining a little... Busy week, Tuesday it was a meeting with Springboard for the Arts in Hopkins. Tomorrow, Thursday the 20th I'll be at Gert & Ermas coffee shop in Glencoe with my work along with painter Bonnie Mohr. Please stop in for coffee and say hello. This weekend is Wayzata Art Experience where I'll have a booth. The weather is supposed to be nice so no excuses... Hope to see you there.

Grab a coffee - this will be a long post...

I have been really busy working on thousands of photographs, unfortunately none of my own... Work has kept me busy the last month but that doesn't mean things have been sitting idle - a lot going on with my photography.

Big news first. I received an Artist Initiative Grant from the Minnesota State Arts board. This is by far the highest accomplishment with my photography and am very thankful for the opportunity. With the grant I will simply be making time to go out and create new work. I intend to make several day trips to Western MN and get lost in the countryside. I also have a few ambitious projects I would like to complete by this time next year. They are all Minnesota based with a theme. That's all I'll reveal for now... I would eventually like to try to approach some publishers with the ideas but this is all well over a year away.

Tonight I've got coffee flowing through me and 89.3 The Current streaming on the imac - can't ask for too much more - pretty content... I'll try to get some new work up on the website yet tonight that I made well before we lost the snow. Also need to get some new work up on the Etsy page but that's a pretty lofty goal. Will need more coffee to get that all banged out.

Speaking of the snow being gone: floods and cycling. Living in Carver is awsome, I absolutely love it for the roads. I've been on the bicycle quite a bit already touring all the flooded areas. I checked out the train bridge in Carver (see above pic) most everyday to see how much the water was going up and now receding. This is the first real flood since we've lived here and it's pretty incredible; it sure draws a crowd and rightfully so. All the spots Cassie and I would hike or ride are completely underwater and feet of water - not just a couple inches. Above my bike is at the MN river crossing near Jordan, next is the Chaska ballpark (which I need to photograph seriously as I've heard rumors of it disappearing due to new roads coming) and finally the train bridge in Carver.

Thus far I've been accepted into the Edina Art Fair and Wayzata Art Experience early this summer. I have a few more applications out so more shows could be added the next few weeks. We'll see how shows go this summer but I'm slowly learning that they may not the best outlet for myself. They require fairly high booth fees, a huge time investment and are kind of a gamble. That said, I like the gamble and meeting people face-to-face is the best so we'll see how the summer goes and base a decision upon it. These shows will be a good measuring stick.

I'll start making more photographs when the spring storms start rolling in, the farmers are in the fields and their crops start forming rows. It won't be long now...

A whole month has passed...

Really, a whole month between posts? Not good on my part... Anyway, how good was last Saturday? I went in for an oil change first thing in the morning and directly afterwords headed west with the camera riding shotgun. Three hundred plus miles later, through fog and snow, I made some of the photographs I've been meaning to make for well over a year. It feels good. I've just started going through and selecting the ones I like best. It'll be a while before any prints are made but I'm excited about them.

I had a fantastic weekend out in the Tetons. We skied Teton Village the first day, Snow King - right in Jackson the second and made a trip over Teton Pass to Grand Targhee the last day. I did very little photographing but a ton of skiing and it was really good. It was my first time to Grand Targhee Resort out in Alta, Wyoming and if you're ever out there skiing a trip out that way is worth it - a hidden gem of a place. After that trip I don't know what I'm going to do the rest of winter - skiing around here just isn't the same...

More Work!

Seasons Greetings,

With all of the recent snow I've been quite motivated to get out and make new work. Grey skies and low visibilities that come along with winter storms are some of my favorite conditions to photograph in. You will see a healthy amount of new work posted on robertglieden.com under the "new work" section on the "work" page.

Adding to my motivation has been the acquisition of a new camera - a Panasonic L1. Actually it's used and has been discontinued for some time, but it's new to me or was a month or two ago... Anyway, my G10 was giving my troubles and it took way too much fiddling on the computer to get a decent black and white print. This new L1 has what they call a "dynamic black and white film mode" that is quite contrasty and I really do not have to do much to the files at all after they come off the camera - something I really appreciate....

I picked-up a used 14-42mm Olympus lens from National Camera that stays on there all the time. In 35mm terms the lens is 28-84mm so it works great for just about everything I need. The camera uses a 4/3's sensor and with that system you can use any 4/3's manufacturer lens/body combination - pretty neat. I put a 58mm digital video lens hood on it - it seemed appropriate considering the classic retro style camera body. I had to sand the hood down quite a bit to prevent vignetting at the corners. I am very pleased with its aesthetic and most importantly its results.

Nov. Update

Thanks to those who made it out to the reception at Ridgewater College last week. The show runs through next Thursday the 19th. I've made a few photographs here and there and will post them to a re-vamped robertglieden.com in the next few weeks. I really enjoy using this new little camera.

The recent stretch of nice weather has had me on my bicycle more than behind the camera. Last Saturday I rode the Sakatah State Trail from Fairbault to Mankato and back. It was the longest bike ride I've done so far - 82 gorgeous miles. It's got me thinking of starting a project of photographing some of our state trails. Now that the leaves have fallen and the trees are bare I'm more excited to photograph and am looking forward to making some images I have in mind.

Here is an image I made the other night on the way home from work. Do notice that it's dark already... Bike rides have but all been eliminated from the evenings and pushed to the weekends only. I have been using Canon's Raw software that come with the camera and I like it. I used it to make this image. The next few weeks have me preparing images for an upcoming exhibition at Ridgewater College in Hutchinson.

Dakota Rail Trail

I rode my bicycle on the Dakota Rail Trail this morning from St. Boni to Wayzata and it was fantastic. Highly recommended. I also received my Canon G10 and am going to go pick-up a lightweight tripod for it. I haven't done any real work with it yet but I'll post some pics of it and from it when I do. Enjoy this fall weather.

Been a while....

As promised in the last post - I've been on the bicycle a lot the last few weeks and loving every pedal stroke. I went to Dallas a few times as well for work. As the state fair started this week it signals the end of summer and I'm fine with that. Things can only slow down and I look forward to it. The cool air this morning felt good.

I got out and photographed some churches a while back but the negatives have been sitting in the camera bag undeveloped for some time now. I'll get to them sooner or later. In other news I have quite a few events coming up in the next few weeks. An outdoor show in Edina and Lakeville and two exhibitions - one at Ridgewater College in my hometown of Hutchinson and an upcoming one in Brookings, South Dakota in early 2010. Hopkins Review

Couldn't have asked for better weather this last weekend in Hopkins. I'm proud to announce that I won the Best in Show award and thank them for the very gracious cash prize. I still have some film waiting to be processed and some churches to photograph but after that I'm planning on hitting the road on my bicycle before summer quickly slips away on me. Holy Smokes...

I just printed off my first 16x20 large format print and it's smoking hot - the quality is amazing... I love it. Got a show this weekend - Downtown Hopkins - and I'm bringing this print with. I've also got www.robertglieden.com updated with a whole new design. Check it out and while there take notice at all the new prints now online. There are plenty more coming but I've been busy printing and matting getting ready for this show.

I've also been watching the Tour de France, well trying to watch it - like I said I've been busy... I've been DVR'ing it for later. Anyway, I've been following Lance's comeback and it's awesome - makes me want to get on my bike and hit the road badly...

Sorry for the troubles...

The website still is not quite up and running. Hopefully tonight it will be - fingers crossed... I changed hosting companies and switching all the settings over is what gave me trouble. I'm a photographer - not a programmer. I got a new imac computer to help me work on these big files that the scans from my negatives create. It is a huge improvement and saves me a lot of time. Once the full website is up you will see it's a completely new design that I'm psyched on. I hope you enjoy it and the many new photographs it now contains. I will have a show coming up in Hopkins on the weekend of July 12th. New photographs will be on display. We're going to Chicago for the Forth so I've got a lot of matting and framing to do yet.

I'm going to be doing a presentation at the Gale Woods Farm in Minnetrista this Saturday June 20th. They have a bunch of activities planned and I'll be doing demonstrations on how my large format camera works to go along with the eight photographs I have on display there. Hopefully the weather can be as good as this last weekend - I got out and made a few negatives. Get more information here: www.galewoodsfarm.com.

In other news I'm going to try a few outdoor art shows this summer. Hopkins will be the first. It'll be downtown on the weekend of July 11 and 12. I've got a lot of printing and matting to do before I'm ready but I'm looking forward to it. Hope to see you there.

Lots of important news.

As you can see - not a lot of posts lately, which means I'm either really busy, or slacking... Truth is I've been really busy with work. I've made quite a few negatives but haven't been able to get to them until today. I made three prints I'm really excited about and no they didn't come from the darkroom. I've had to put that project off - I just haven't the time. I made it in there for a few sessions but by the time it took just to get everything mixed, set-up and then cleaned-up at the end of the session killed most of my evenings. Negatives started to pile-up. I made a few decent prints but never even got around to de-curling or toning them. It is a very rewarding process and the process I have the upmost respect for. That said my absolute favorite part of photography is to be out searching and making images. I work a full-time job and then-some so my time is limited. Because of this I will continue to scan and make inkjet prints. It's a process that works for me and more importantly for my schedule. I can at least continue to be in the darkroom processing film. (On a side note my negatives enlarged quite well and dust and scratches were not nearly as bad as I was afraid of.)

In other news I got a 90mm lens. This is a wide angle for the 4x5 format which I shoot. It's in Wisconsin right now getting a CLA (clean, lube and adjust) but when it gets back it'll allow me to make more photographs of tall buildings like churches and grain elevators. My camera bag now consists of a whopping two lenses - 90mm and 135mm - less is more... In the future I'll try to do a blog post of what I all carry in my bag.

Most importantly, editions are going to get smaller. 25 prints is just way too many to keep track of and in some instances unrealistic. Editions are going down to 5 prints/size. This will hopefully contribute to keeping me out in the field making images which, like I said before, is where I want to be. As for collectors I hope it gives added value and comfort knowing you have a unique print - not some mass produced reproduction.

Upcoming... I have a show coming up at the Gale Woods farm in Minnetrista. I will have ten farm related images on display there at the end of the month. I'll post more details as it draws near. There will be a few new prints unveiled there. I'm really excited about these images - I bought green, red and yellow filters to help control contrast and they're giving my photographs a little extra boost that makes a huge difference in the final print.

Also upcoming... I'm getting some bigger paper - 17"x22" that will allow me to try making some 16x20's. A while back I showed my work to a group of photographers, many of which, I have a lot of respect for. The consensus seemed to be everyone wanted to see them big. I'm not saying I'll be offering prints this large yet - this is just a test to see how my scans hold up printing that big. We'll see... If I do go this route total edition size would be 15 - Broken down: five 8x10's, five 11x14's and five 16x20's. I'll post later on how things turn out and update the website with new images hopefully by months end.

I'm going to a little scanning class at the Minneapolis Photo Center tomorrow. I get closer to 30 years old this weekend...

A huge thank you to everyone who came out to Clay Coyote this weekend. I had a really good time - the weekend flew by and the weather couldn't have been better. It was so nice to meet the other artists, some old friends, family and make some new friends. I really appreciate the support - Thank you all very much.

What a morning...

I love spring snowstorms. We got a good heavy wet two inches that stuck to everything and I got out of bed early and took advantage of it. I had an absolute blast this morning. I went to the State Park in Jordan as I knew there was a pond there that reflected trees spectacularly. I have been waiting for some time for there to be open water with snow on the ground. The contrast of the black water and white snow should be spectacular. While I was setting up the shot I was startled by a huge hawk landing up in the trees right in front of me, a flock of Wood Ducks splashing down 20 yards away and was buzzed by two Hooded Mergansers - it was really neat. I went though a lot of film today in a few other locations as well. At a few locations cars would drive past (probably on their way to church) and they'd be waving and smiling - it was obvious to even a casual observer that the conditions were good. They knew I was reaping the rewards. It's been a while since I've shot landscapes and was nice to return to some today.

Tomorrow I will probably get to work making some enlargements in the darkroom if all goes well. First, I'll be doing some basic testing of things like safelights and finding my proper proof time etc... Hopefully later in the afternoon I'll be making some prints.

Also, upcoming April 17, 18 and 19th I'll be returning to Clay Coyote Gallery for their spring open house. I'll have more large format images there than last time and a bunch of work from the Hutchinson area. The open house is all indoors so no worries with the weather. Tom and Betsy always put on a first class event and I'm very pleased to be invited back. Come on out and say hello. Directions and more here: www.claycoyote.com.

Minnetonka Closing

"An Uncommon Landscape" at the Minnetonka Center for the Arts closes tomorrow. There is a reception from 6-8. The weather will be much nicer this time around.

My darkroom is ready to print but I am not. A busy weekend ahead will probably keep me out of there for another week. It still needs some finishing touches like some more shelf space and the all important radio. I need to get in there soon...

Sending out a congratulations to my brother and his wife who just had a baby girl. Congrats. Also wanted to let everyone know there will be a re-opening for "An Uncommon Landscape" at the Minnetonka Art Center on March 26th from 6-8 p.m. The opening was in the middle of a snowstorm so technically this is a closing and the show will be coming down that night so come on out!

Also wanted to thank Larry Marcus and Matt Ketcham for hooking me up with a bunch of odds and ends to get the darkroom functioning. Most of my time lately has been spent trying to get this project off the ground. It won't be long now before I get my hands wet... Thanks guys.

Thanks to all who trekked out to the opening Thursday night. I love snowstorms but this one's timing couldn't have been worse. Oh well, but like I said in my newsletter give me a call or send me an-email and I'll meet you for coffee or where-ever and can go check it out from there. I've already been in contact with a few friends who've taken me up on that offer. The show looks great and the space is stunning.

I'm going to pick-up that enlarger this afternoon and hopefully tomorrow I'll have a stand built for it. In preparation I've been re-reading Fred Picker's Zone VI Workshop and of course Ansel's The Negative and The Print. I'll need to retest film speeds and development times for the enlarger. Other than that not too much is new. Glad it's the weekend as I'm pretty run-down from all the hustle the last two weeks. Need to relax...

I'm spent...

As I was just driving home from Tom Arndt's opening at MIA it hit me... I've been running non-stop all week and the sleepiness has now caught-up. I'm debating putting coffee on or just going to sleep.

The opening was fantastic. Go to MIA and see it. I didn't count but there are a lot of photographs on display and if you grew-up anywhere around here you will relate to them. Other than the photographs, two things really caught my attention: 1. A young girl was looking at a photograph with whom I believe was her grandmother. The young girl was pointing and naming every person in the photograph - they were her relatives. I don't remember when the photograph was taken but it was quite some time ago. I'll say it again - you will relate to these photographs; they are Minnesota. 2. The food was perfect. If you are not familiar with Tom's work you need to know that he's photographed the MN State Fair extensively. My favorite comment of the night came from a friend who said it'll probably be the first and last time he'll get to eat mini-dognuts from a hostess on a fancy silver platter. I could only smirk. Finally, I got to meet a few more "F Stops Here Members" and realize how fortunate I am to be surrounded with that kind of talent. It's incredible...

Wednesday's meeting went really well. I showed a few prints and let it be known I was looking for an enlarger - I went to the right place - enlargers were coming out of the woodwork! Needless to say, you know the direction I'll now be taking. The darkroom should see an addition by the end of next week but it might be a while before it's operational.

Last night I made it to the Wild game and had a great time. It's just too bad they can't score goals. Hard workers are good and I got a lot of respect for hard work, but you can't just have a whole team full of hard-workers - you need goal scorers too. I suppose though as long as me and 18,000 other boneheads keep showing-up management sees no reason to change things.

Bringing prints to Minnetonka tomorrow and possibly going to Icebox for another opening.

Busy Week Ahead

This is a fun week coming up - a lot going on and that's a good thing. Today I just finished-up some framing and hopefully/maybe I'll get around to adding another image to the website. Wednesday I'm going to the Wymann building for a "F Stops Here Meeting" which I'm really looking forward to. Friday night Tom Arndt has an opening at the Minneapolis Institute of Arts which should be spectacular. You can see a little video of him on wcco.com talking about his new book. Just put his name in their search and it'll come up. Saturday I'll be dropping off four images at the Minnetonka Center for the Arts for an upcoming exhibition "An Uncommon Landscape." I'll simply say I am very excited and grateful to be included in this show. Later on Saturday I plan on heading over to the Northrup King Building to Icebox Gallery and Framing for an opening.

So that Harman Matt paper I was talking about in my last post looked purple/magenta when I had it framed so I got some Hahnemuhle Photo Rag Ultra Smooth instead. I will be using this paper. The images going to Minnetonka are printed with it and I don't see myself using anything else. I panicked when I opened the box though because it definitely had texture but after it was printed on the texture disappeared completely. It holds detail well and the whites are bright.

I've not been sleeping well lately. I keep going back and forth about getting an enlarger for the darkroom. Everything has its pluses and minuses. I hate photoshop and I hate how much ink costs for my printer (oh, and don't forget new expensive upgrades come out every six months for both). I do like how when I print on my printer there's no washing or toning or curling of paper. It spits out a print and it's done. I really enjoy the new Hahnemuhle paper I just wrote about in my last paragraph and inkjet papers, in general, are really good right now in both quality and choices. This is not the case with silver papers. With an enlarger I feel obligated to print on fibre paper (which curls upon drying and requires extensive washing and toning) rather than the easy washing, flat lying but not as archival rc paper. You see, there are trade-offs and the main thing that bothers me is Photoshop. The workflow sucks. I'd rather look at a work print and say "give it a second or two more or less" or "move up or down a filter" turn on the light and put it in the developer. There are no curves or levels or reverting to saved copies nonsense... I don't know, I'm just venting hopefully trying to figure this out and get it out of my head. Enlargers are out there on the cheap and one can buy a lot of paper and chemicals for the price of two ink cartridges... Let me know what you think: robert@robertglieden.com.

February Update

Might as well cross out the last statement of me using Ilford Gold Fibre Silk. I used up a whole pack and all the prints had a terrible edge where the print head makes its last pass. I tried setting after setting on the printer all to no avail. Ilford got back to me and told me I probably have low humidity which, I do. Rather than fussing with it I just ran to West and picked up Harman Matt FB. The first sheet came out of the printer now and it looks pretty good, the blacks need a little adjusting but this might be the one... Smooth surface, good detail and a long lasting fibre base have me thinking this could work for me.

I'll be printing today because I have four images going to the Minnetonka Center for the Arts upcoming exhibit "An Uncommon Landscape" curated by David Luke. The opening reception is Febuary 26, 6-8 p.m. The show runs Febuary 26 - March 26.

A good week...

It's been a really good week... Wednesday night I made it downtown to meet with a group a photographers and had the pleasure of meeting Tom Arndt. At the meeting I also learned one of my favorite photographers, David Husom was having an opening in Red Wing on Friday night (last night). So I made it to Red Wing after work yesterday for the reception and it was fantastic. I ran into some of the same faces I saw on Wednesday and this time actually got to meet quite a few of them. One was William Pringle Rodman whose photographs are on exhibit with Husom's at the Anderson Center in Red Wing. It was really good to see some gorgeous photographs made close to home. It all was a bit awkward for myself at times as I have a terrible time matching names to faces but all in all a fantastic experience and I look forward to matching many more in the future.

This morning I solved my paper dilemma. I'll now be printing with Ilford's Gold Fibre Silk. Ilford is a name I trust and like to support. The paper itself is warmer than the Harman but less glossy and that's what I was looking for. The price tag of the Ilford is an added bonus and it comes in small quantities which is handy at times as well. I wanted to shoot this weekend but I'll be in the warmth of the studio printing instead.

To make a long story short, I prefer the Harman over the Hahnemuhle Photo Rag Pearl I purchased this afternoon. The feel of the Hahnemuhle is really nice, but it has a slight texture that I don't care for. Not too mention it's fussy with the printer - I need to make a lot of adjustments to make it work. I may take a second look at the Hahnemuhle Satin but that looked extremely warm tone in the store.

Anyone need some paper?

West Photo

I needed to replace the maintenance cartridge on my printer and they had it in stock at West Photo in Minneapolis. I'd been to West before but somehow never realized the amazing amount of paper they stock back behind some curved wall. I was really impressed and have been back there once already and am going back tomorrow.

As I mentioned earlier I've been going back and forth between trying matt paper instead of the Harman Glossy I'm currently using. So I finally picked up some Hahnemuehle Photo Rag. After comparing it side by side to my current prints it doesn't hold up. Harman's Gloss holds detail much better, especially in details like grass. Also, like most matt papers the blacks can't compete with glossy. Of course, once under glass, this isn't a problem, but I won't be using it any time soon. I will check out some other Hahnemuehle offerings though - specifically Photo Rag Satin and Pearl. Don't get me wrong Harman Glossy FB AL is a fantastic paper but I just don't think the glitz and glamour of glossiness is appropriate for my work. That said, until I find something better I'm sticking with it.

A quick note before the new year - I made it easier to subscribe to the blog; just click to the right and they'll let you know when I update. Also, you can be a "follower of my blog" and have your picture shown to the right. This will be a cool way for me to know who's out there following along and for you to show your support. You can also watch it grow - believe me it does every-time I post (over 700 visits this year) Don't be shy.

I made a few more prints the last few days and can't wait to get them up on the website.

Hopefully in the next 2-3 weeks I'll have them ready. I've been looking into a lot of call for entries lately so hopefully I'll be able to announce a show or two for early 2009.

2008's been a monumental year for myself - a new job, a new car, a new home and a wedding... With these huge changes my photography was definitely put on the back-burner, but it was a successful year nonetheless. I made the transition to large format and there is no looking back. I couldn't be happier with the process and the prints I'm producing through it. The only changes I see forthcoming in 09 would be the addition of a wider angle lens to help with some of the rural architecture I've been shooting. I will not be switching papers (see previous post). Look for me to be in the field more often and hopefully more exhibitions can be added to the resume.

Merry Christmas

Merry Christmas from Cassie and I. As you may have noticed, a lack of posts this month, that's because work has kept me extremely busy (in these times this is not a complaint). Through the holidays I plan on taking some personal time to enjoy a few winter activities that I've been missing out on as well. The last few nights we've laced up the skates and did some cross country skiing. More cross country skiing in the upcoming days. I will be hitting the slopes soon as well - my patience has about run out on that...

On the photography side I've been thinking a lot lately. I have been pondering doing a few projects. It seems the more I think about projects the less motivated I become. It seems that if I set a time frame or any parameters it just becomes forced and stressful. My newer work all fits nicely into two categories (landscape and architecture) so I think I'm going to leave it at that. In the long run what I'm doing will all become one huge project... I've also realized while working so much how much free time I had before and will manage it better in 2009. In the new year I plan on shooting as much as ever and will consider the year a huge success if I can participate in 3-4 high quality exhibitions. I've already been researching a few call for entries.

Finally I'm going to be loading the film holders and getting out in the field again. All the snowfall has the landscape looking just the way I like it and I'm really motivated to get shooting some trees and weeds. I'm also going to be running matt paper through the printer again for the new work. I miss the look.

A little project

I decided I needed a little winter project so I put together this single speed bicycle this weekend. I rode it a bit around the neighborhood already and it's a blast. Now I can ride all winter without getting sand and salt all over my good road bike. Hills are hard...

I also have six negatives drying on the rack. I made them yesterday and processed this morning. I've got quite a bit of new work starting to amass. Hopefully after the new year I'll put a new category up on the site as these photographs are more architectural than landscape.

Went West

I went west yesterday to Morris to pick-up some of my work. I love it out there. I took Hwy. 212 up to Hwy. 59 - I have never been out by Lac Qui Parle before but there are photographs everywhere. I will be back that way for sure - I ran out of film... I had a really good time just driving around the countryside. I also realized I'm really growing to like my new camera - it's so easy to use; the gridlines on the ground-glass are priceless and movements are simple.

Open house last night.

We made it to the Minneapolis Photo Center last evening. It's pretty awesome what they've got going - a huge place with a lot of wall space, studio, digital lab and darkroom. All of it has style for miles with modern decor. A really cool space. Cassie saw an ULF (ultra large format) camera and couldn't believe it. Their open house continues today. Check them out for sure either online or in person.

I've been shooting and enjoying it immensely as of late. I'll post images to robertglieden.com when I've got enough keepers.

Studio/workspace

With the help of my father in-law my workspace is now complete. He built the work-stand my Epson printer and scanner are sitting on (iphone photo). Inside I have another office printer, paper, framing tools and other miscellaneous office supplies. It's a really slick set-up and will definitely help productivity.

I've been trying to get out and make a few negatives but the wind is being relentless. Hopefully later in the day Sunday or monday it'll go down and I can get to work.

The new camera is here (iphone photo). Actually, it's been here for a bit now and I've been busy running film speed and development time tests; therefore, no new posts or pictures of it. I can't wait to get out and start shooting. Like I said, the only shooting I've done was of black and white cards for tests so I've yet to really use it. Hopefully this weekend I'll get out into the field. With the little I've used it so far it's been a pleasure.

Good News Bad News

First with the bad news... The bad news was the "big" news. I was on a list to get a new camera but it turns out I can't get the one I wanted... I can say now I'm really considering an Ebony but their prices are a deterrent at this time. Bummed because I have a lot of new work I really want to get started on...

The good news! I brought 8 large format photographs to Vivid Image in Hutchinson today and they will be on display from now through December. On Monday October 13th they are having an open house from 4-6 p.m. I will be attending to answer any questions and to talk about my work. Please stop in then or anytime you're passing through. You can find their new location on their website.

A reminder that I have a few images in Morris at the Stevens County Historical society. They will be on exhibit until the end of the month.

Crow River Arts Class

MCAD Last Night...

I went to MCAD last night to listen to Mary Virginia Swanson speak. She is a highly sought after portfolio reviewer and knows or has worked with most everyone in the industry. It was very interesting. I realized I'm doing some good things already and there were quite a few new things I picked up. I'm still trying to soak it all in while taking a good hard look at myself and where I'm at. It got me thinking to say the least....

In other news I picked up a Nikon 135mm large format lens to replace an older lens I have. I'm looking forward to getting out in the field with it. I love this time of year.

iphone review

My wife got me an iphone for a wedding present. I was so surprised and I absolutely love it. I have my ical right at my fingertips so when someone asks me what I'm doing on (insert any random day here) I can look it up and know exactly what's going on. That's my favorite feature followed by Internet and instant e-mail updates. The map/gps also rules. I haven't gone for a bike ride with it yet but the built in ipod and phone (in case I get a flat) will make riding even more enjoyable. I highly recommend this device - it's way more than just a phone.

I got my wife a camera for her present. A Casio Exilm Ex-S10 to be precise. It's a perfect slim point and shoot that conveniently fits anywhere. It's so slim you can barely feel it in your pocket. To me this is the most important feature in a point and shoot - you can bring it anywhere easily. We used it all over Miami and Grand Cayman and it's simply easy to use and takes great pictures. We connected it to our TV once home to show family and friends images and they looked great. Oh, and its got a huge LCD on the back - how do you not love that? I would purchase this camera again in a heartbeat. Ours will see a lot of use.

So I'm back from my honeymoon and it was interesting... We were staying in Grand Cayman and were cut short due to Hurricane Gustav. We were supposed to stay until Saturday but we left Thursday evening and spent the rest of our time in Miami to catch our connecting flight. Miami is a pretty cool city. We spent a good day exploring it.

Two reviews coming up in the next few days (still trying to get settled in) - iphone 3g and Casio Exilm camera.

Like I said before, MCP is closing but they are cleaning house this weekend. Books and a whole lot of other things will be for sale there. I'm going to check it out. Also, National Camera Exchange is having their tent sale in Golden Valley - I'll probably swing in there on the way through and see if I can't find anything worth living without...

Monday there is a meeting at Minneapolis College of Art and Design about a grant opportunity I plan on attending. I'm sure a visit to the MIA is in store as long as I'm there, also doing a shoot for a friend Monday. A new show at the Weinstein Gallery opens Friday the 22nd and I got a wedding on the 23rd - then honeymooning...

I've been shooting again (into small towns right now) and really studying to get more precise with my processing times.

Saw an Adams print today...

So I saw a print by Ansel Adams today at the MIA. I have never seen one before and was pretty excited to finally get the opportunity. I guess to sum it up it was pretty much what I thought it would be. It didn't knock my socks off or make my knees shake - it was a damn good print though, albeit small and behind scratched Plexiglas. They also had prints by Edward Weston and Walker Evans on display among others. I need to visit there more often and next time make an appointment to go through their archives. It's remarkable how many great prints are all in that one location - such a good resource and free of charge...

I spent the rest of the day exploring Minneapolis galleries. I made it to a few and have quite a few more I'd like to visit. After visiting Chicago, Minneapolis doesn't seem quite so big anymore but the more I explore Minneapolis the more I like it.

I'm getting married to my long-time girlfriend, Cassandra this next month so blog updates (well, most everything) will probably get pushed aside for the next few weeks as final preparations are being made.

Miles and miles and miles and...

Back from Chicago and I'm about to hit the road again. I'm leaving for Morris, MN to drop off a few pieces for an upcoming show. More on this later... I might be close to 1,500 miles this weekend when it's all said and done.

Anyway, I had a great time in Chicago. It was great to have my cousin Julie along to make the drive very enjoyable. Thanks for putting a roof over my head too Julie! Much appreciated... While I was at my workshop her and her husband Jeff (who flew in from Florida) looked at real estate as they will be relocating to the area - and what a great area it is. After the first day of the workshop at Calumet in Downtown Chicago I had the opportunity to cruise around the city. I must say I was very impressed. The people were all pleasant and the town was extremely clean and modern. A highlight was a drive along the shoreline with the top down seeing everything from Soldier Field, the yachts, beaches and Navy Pier. I look forward to visiting my cousins when they move out there and getting to the many galleries which were already closed for the day. Next time I'll bring the bicycle though - parking is terrible.

Of course the highlight of the trip was getting to meet one of my influences, David Plowden. I think the main thing I will take away from this experience is just how cool it was to be sitting in the garden at the Cuneo Museum casually discussing all things photography. It was amazing to hear how many great photographers he's crossed paths with throughout his career and the stories that accompany them. These are just some of the names that came up: Fred Picker, Minor White, Ansel Adams and Walker Evans - that's pretty good company...

I also come away from this workshop feeling fairly well about where I sit with my photography. David had very kind words about my photographs and I thank him for those kind words. Thank you David. It was also a pleasure getting to know the other workshop participants and seeing their work and how they like to make images. I have attached a group photo we took at the end of the mentorship.

So the printer is running as I type and the paper I'm running through it is Harmon Glossy FB Al. I am really impressed with this paper. I can't say I have experimented with lots of different papers and now that I've tried this stuff I have no need to. I really like it. The only complaint is that the prints seem to curl a bit. Maybe this will go away once they dry down a bit. Time will tell, but for now I'm really pleased. I mentioned in my last post I was shooting to have robertglieden.com up today. Unfortunately that is not going to happen. I'm too busy preparing my portfolio for Chicago this weekend. My original goal was to have it up by the end of the month so I'm still shooting for that. As of today, my old website, rgimagery.com is no longer available. My new site, robertglieden.com will be up shortly. I'm working on the image gallery this week so hopefully a week from today, Monday, June 16th everything will be up and running - that is if all goes smoothly. I'll be doing a matting and framing demonstration for our photography club, The Hutchinson Photography Club this Saturday, the 14th at 10 a.m. in the Hutchinson Library. This Weekend

Tomorrow is free State Park day. Go out and make some pictures. I've received my scanner and have been doing tests all week to see what methods and settings get the most out of my negatives. I've decided on a workflow I'm pleased with and will finally start to make some scans today. With the scans a website should be done in about a week or two. Some Harmon Glossy FB paper should be coming Monday and printing will begin. Also, if you're looking for something to do the Edina Art Fair is this weekend. I was invited but declined as I've dedicated this year to learning with the large format and creating a new body of work with it. Back to scanning....

I made some negatives at our family farm near Arlington this weekend. I also went for a hike with my Godchild, fiance' and cousin at Baylor Park near Norwood. We all made some photographs and had a good time - Happy Birthday Madison! I also ordered a used Pentax Digital Spotmeter off the auction site with help from the Southwest Minnesota Arts and Humanities Council Grant I received. It should arrive either tomorrow or Tuesday. Just now, I ordered an Epson V700 scanner that will finally allow me to start scanning the negatives I've been making. The scanner should arrive later this week and with a little learning curve hopefully I'll have some prints ready by the end of the month. Robertglieden.com is just about ready to go. I still need to purchase hosting and get some images on there. I'm shooting for the end of June to have it up and running with images. This week I'll be practicing/learning with the Pentax meter and hopefully by the end of the week be making some high-quality scans.

Time flies...

I can't believe it's Wednesday already, but this weekend I put on a lot of miles. I was to Fairfax and Banning State Park (near Sandstone). I made some negatives I'm really excited about. On the way home I was passing through Howard Lake and found an old grain elevator that excited me. It's crazy how I drove so many miles up North with a clear purpose but managed to haphazardly find an image that I found more exciting just down the road from home. This next weekend I've got a few more locations around here to get to. I'm so glad I got a more fuel efficient vehicle - have you seen those fuel prices? I saw $3.65 today. I know for a fact that if I still had my truck I wouldn't be making the images I am. I probably wouldn't even be out making any photographs.

I've been busy shooting a lot lately - need to go on a film and fixer run. I'm proud to announce that I just got a more fuel efficient vehicle to make those runs on. I got a VW GTI and love it. Today I was shooting near Biscay, MN and wound up with four ticks on me - not good. I'm starting to get a pretty good collection of negatives and am feeling more comfortable with scanning. Hopefully by the end of May I'll have robertglieden.com up and be able to debut some prints to go along with the launch.

So I got an Epson 3200 scanner off a Craigslist for ten bucks. This has enabled me to actually get to view my negatives for the first time and it is exciting! The quality of the 4x5 negative is stunning. On the other hand it also shows I need to wash and dust my negatives much better - nothing a wetting agent and canned air won't solve. I'm just using a piece of mat board as a negative holder (I already ordered replacement holders) in the scanner and the quality already rivals or surpasses my Nikon D200 digital SLR. Hopefully I can post some images later this week...

Spring has sprung?

Kind of a weird day... I got up early this morning and absolutely froze my hands off making exposures of the freshly fallen snow. Now, I just got back from a long run where I was sweating and noticed most of the six-plus inches we received has already vanished. Spring time in Minnesota...

I also noticed the Northern ducks are back around. A lot of them along the river in Hutchinson (some in the sanctuary too). So far I've seen Hooded Mergansers, Scaup, Ring-necks, Buffleheads and Wood Ducks to name a few. They are awful spooky; bring binoculars or an extremely long lens if you want to see them.

The Hutchinson Photography Club will be getting together in the field on Saturday, April 19th 8 a.m. We will meet at Veterans Park off Adams St. near the tank. On my run today, I ran past the area and saw lots of ducks, geese and plenty of water running over the rocks for photographic opportunities. As of now, my schedule looks good and I plan on being there before 8 a.m to take advantage of the low light and moving water. I'll post a time when I'm absolutely sure I can confirm it.

Scans of some 4x5 negatives Friday? Cross your fingers...

Just came from out of the dark...

I made three more negatives this morning. These will be noticeably sharper now that I've received a Toyo focusing loupe from Midwest Photo Exchange. This has made focusing so much easier. For now I'm just using my digital slr for a meter and the negatives look pretty good. Hopefully in the near future I'll be able to pick up a spot meter for precise metering and using the zone system. Better yet, this will make the camera bag considerably lighter and save some space. In the meantime, I picked up some of Mr. Fred Picker's books from the library to get a better handle on the zone system.

Negatives made...

So the brown truck dropped off a new tripod the other day allowing me to finally get to work. I went out for a short drive and made two exposures. I must say, for my first try with a 4x5 camera, they turned out pretty good. I was happy just to find an image on the film... What I've learned form this experience is that my processing technique could use some refining - a lot of scratches. Next time I'll try processing emulsion side down in the trays (that and a little more tlc). I made two more exposures today and hopefully they'll turn-out scratch free. I can tell you at this point I find working with the new camera an absolute joy; it challenges me and I find that refreshing. I learn and improve each time I press the shutter and view the negatives. With a few more accessories that process will become much easier and my negatives will keep improving. I'll keep you up to date with my progress right here,

More Puzzle Pieces

A few more pieces of the puzzle went together today. I got some film (Ilford HP5 to be precise) along with some chemicals to process. I still need some trays and am waiting for the tax return to get a sturdier tripod. Hopefully I can have a negative to bring to our photography club on the 25th.

This showed up yesterday - a day early... I'm pretty excited. It's in really good shape and even has the original paperwork that it came with. This is my new tool, however, I've got a lot to learn and it will take some time. A realistic goal is for me to have some decent negatives by May.

News just around the corner...

Keep an eye open for some good news later this week or early next week. I'm pretty excited... What else has me excited? Interlibrary loan. Interlibrary loan lets me, or anyone with a library card, order books from a wide variety of libraries around the state. My library, the Hutchinson Public Library doesn't have much for books on photography. With interlibrary loan I've ordered books that allow me to read up on large format in addition to getting my hand on some books by John Sexton, Michael Kenna and tomorrow, I'll be picking up one by David Plowden. These books make cold winter nights pretty damn enjoyable. That and the Wild, keep an eye on them - I'm predicting a long playoff run...

Why large format?

Why am I taking this leap? The large format is exactly what I need. It fits my needs and is perfect for the way I work. I make black and white photographs of old, lonesome rural landscapes. It doesn't make a lot of sense to go driving down dusty gravel roads looking for these scenes with thousands of dollars of the latest technology in my camera bag. To the contrary, it makes a lot of sense for me to go out into the past with a wooden tool (one that doesn't even require batteries) which fits into the environment and slows me down. Nostalgic scenes with a nostalgic tool. It is not about me going out and making 20 exposures and choosing the best one on the computer. It's about going out and making one exposure - getting it right the first time.

Technically, the larger format is going give my prints an amount of detail which can not be achieved through a digital camera. The 4x5 negative is 20 square inches. Because the negative is bigger, it requires less enlargement to make prints. The large negative captures more detail, texture and the level of sharpness is truly amazing.

I do not have room or access to a traditional darkroom. I will still be printing through my Epson 3800 printer. This printer has more than enough capacity to print the fine details of the negative. As always, the prints will be made to last.

In this time of transformation and discovery I ask for your patience. Learning the process of the larger format is going to take some time. I will make some good negatives. I will make a lot of bad negatives. This is me learning. This is making me a better photographer.

This is my new journal. I'm making a transformation from rg imagery to Robert Glieden Photography. Why the name change?

1. rg imagery stood for Robert Glieden Imagery. Clearly - no one understood what this meant, there was no identity. rg imagery is now simply Robert Glieden Photography. robertglieden.com will be coming this summer.

2. A change in focus. Last year was the first year I displayed my photography. I displayed at outdoor art/craft shows. The focus is now switching away from these shows and to galleries and local museums. I may do an outdoor show or two this summer.

3. Editions. Because of change #2 my photographs will now come in editions. Editions will be small and uncomplicated. More details on editions will be posted early summer.

4. Switching formats. I am making a transition away from digital capture to large format photography. I will still print digitally however. More on this move in an upcoming post.

In conclusion, Robert Glieden Photography is a fresh start. These are the reasons behind the transformation. As you can see, there are more than a few changes and therefore, a fresh start is called for. www.rgimagery.com is still up. Prints are still available. Again, robertglieden.com will be coming this summer. I've posted this so hopefully there will be no confusion.
